Welcome to the Cullman Housing Authority (CHA), where our mission is to provide decent, safe, and affordable housing for our community’s families, seniors, and persons with disabilities. For over 75 years, CHA has been a cornerstone of the Cullman community, guided by the belief that “everyone deserves a safe, affordable and dignified place to call home.” We are proud to unite quality housing with supportive services, helping residents build better neighborhoods and brighter futures.
Our agency was established in 1949 under Alabama state law as a public housing authority . Although we work closely with local government, CHA operates independently – we receive no local tax funding, relying instead on tenant rents and federal HUD subsidies to sustain our programs . Through responsible stewardship and a commitment to excellence, CHA has earned recognition as a HUD “High Performer,” reflecting our dedication to effective management of resources while serving those in need

Cullman Housing Authority’s Public Housing & Section 8 waitlists will open the weeks of June 16 – 19, 2025 and June 23 – 26, 2025. All applications must be returned no later than 5:00 pm by July 17, 2025. No documents will be required at this time. Applications will be available at the Administration Building, 408 Cleveland Ave SW, Cullman, Alabama 35055.

The Cullman Housing Authority is open to the public Monday - Thursday 8:00 to 12:00. If you must conduct business in the Office it will be by appointment only from 1:00 to 4:30. If you need to make an appointment, please call the office at 256-734-6171 and speak to your Property Manager.

Rent and Updated Information can be returned to our office, mailed or dropped in our mailbox in front of the Office.

Board of Commissioners

Our policy and governance are overseen by a five-member Board of Commissioners appointed by the Mayor of Cullman, plus our Executive Director. The Board of Commissioners provides leadership, approves policies and budgets, and ensures that CHA fulfills its mission in accordance with state and federal law.

Cullman Housing Authority: Serving Hundreds with Safe, Affordable Homes

Today, Cullman Housing Authority manages 326 public housing units in the southwest part of the City of Cullman , maintained to high standards for the comfort of our residents. We also administer the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program to assist low-income families in renting decent, private-market homes throughout Cullman City and Cullman County. In total, CHA’s housing programs provide vital assistance to hundreds of households in our area.

Public Housing

How to Apply:

Everyone must complete an application to determine eligibility and be placed on the Public Housing Waiting List. When the wait list is open, you may apply online or picking up an application, which is available at the CHA Administration Office, located at 408 Cleveland Avenue SW, Cullman, AL 35055.

The information you provide on your application determines your placement on the appropriate wait list by bedroom size. If you have any changes from the information you provided on your application, you need to come into the office at 408 Cleveland Avenue SW to complete a Change Form so that we can update your application.
